The government has set out plans to simplify domestic package holiday bookings, launching a consultation on Wednesday (20 September) to ensure more choice and more competitive prices for customers.
This is part of a wider attempt to reform package travel regulations, which include the flight-inclusive packages widely sold by tour operators such as Jet2, Tui and easyJet holidays.
According to ministers, the 12-week consultation will look at whether reforming domestic package holidays will boost the UK’s domestic tourism. It will also seek industry advice on how to remove regulatory burdens, allowing businesses to be more competitive.
“Our domestic travel industry is crucial to our economy, but many holiday companies are faced with often over-burdensome regulations that make it difficult for them to grow and thrive,” said business minister Kevin Hollinrake.
“Today’s consultation is a major step to cutting red tape, which could benefit millions of British holidaymakers and give the sector a much-needed boost for the future.”
Commenting on the news, Rocio Concha, director of policy and advocacy at consumer champion Which?, said the government needs to take this opportunity to show it is siding with travellers.
“The government must take this opportunity to show that it is on the side of beleaguered travellers, and while cutting unnecessary red tape, ensure the right level of consumer protection is afforded to domestic packages when things go wrong,” Concha added.
