Staff at Hays Travel’s Vine Place store in Sunderland escaped without injury after the shop was vandalised during a wave of rioting in the wake of a mass stabbing in Southport last week, which claimed three young girls’ lives.
The shop windows were smashed at the weekend as anti-immigration demonstrations, which have been condemned by prime minister Sir Keir Starmer as "far-right thuggery", continued across the country.
Northumbria Police said several of its officers were injured during the unrest in Sunderland on Saturday (3 August), three of whom required hospital treatment, while eight people were arrested after a police building was targeted and a Citizens Advice premises set alight.
Helen Hays, daughter of Hays Travel owner and chair Dame Irene Hays, said bricks were thrown through the Vine Place store’s windows.
"We’re a Sunderland-based business who do huge amounts for the local community, dedicate nearly £1 million a year to charities across the UK, we’re taking on more than 500 apprentices. Why?" she said, adding: "Nothing comes from hate but more hate. Violence helps absolutely no one."

Jonathon Woodall-Johnston, Hays Travel’s chief operating officer, said: “Hays Travel Vine Place had its windows broken on Saturday evening – thankfully no one was hurt, and the damage will be repaired for business as usual on Monday [5 August].
"Our thanks go to Northumbria Police, who were at the scene quickly and have been visible and supportive."
