Holiday Extras has pledged £10,000 towards earthquake relief efforts in Turkey in Syria, and urged others businesses and travel professionals to donate what they can.
The holiday essential providers has backed Oxfam’s emergency relief fund after the region was struck by a magnitude 7.8 quake during the early hours of Monday (6 February).
This was followed by a second tremor several hours later while rescue efforts were under way.
Nearly 5,000 are understood to have died in the disaster, although the World Health Organization has warned the death toll is likely to be several times higher with many still trapped in rubble after thousands of buildings collapsed.
The quake struck near the south-eastern Turkish city of Gaziantep, near the country’s border with Syria, but the effects of the tremor were felt across much of both countries, as well as in Cyprus and Lebanon.
An international aid effort is under way, with a team of medics from the UK preparing to fly out to Turkey shortly. The BBC reports more are likely to follow once they assess the situation.
The Foreign Office is continuing to advice UK residents avoid travelling to south-east Turkey, and to follow advice from local authorities and/or their tour operators if they are in the area.
In an update posted to its website on Tuesday, Holiday Extras said: "As you’ve probably seen on the news, an earthquake hit Turkey and Syria last night, and a state of emergency is ongoing in the area.
"Holiday Extras has donated £10,000 to Oxfam’s emergency relief fund, and if you can help we encourage you to consider contributing too."
