Iceland’s Blue Lagoon closes again due to new wave of volcanic activity

The geothermal spa will remain closed through Tuesday (19 March) after a volcanic eruption started in Reykjanes peninsula in the south-west of the country on Saturday (16 March).

The closure comes as Blue Lagoon fully reopened to the public in mid-February, following months of on-off closures due to heightened seismic activity in the region.

“All guests with bookings during this temporary closure period will be contacted,” said the country’s authorities. 

Visitors wishing to modify or cancel their reservations have also been urged to directly use the facility’s booking platform, My Booking.

“We will continue to closely follow the guidelines and recommendations of the authorities, working collaboratively with them to monitor the progression of events,” Blue Lagoon added.

Iceland’s meteorological office said on Sunday (17 March) the eruption had not ended despite the propagation of lava slowing down substantially, meaning it still presented risks. 

“However, the eruption has not ended, and lava continues to be extruded from a 0.5-km-long fissure, as confirmed by web camera and drone imagery,” the met office added.
