Sajid Javid has said the justification for having international travel restrictions has been "minimised" due to the prevalence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the UK, adding the government hoped to remove the country’s current travel curbs "quickly".
The health secretary’s announcement came after he was quizzed by Labour MP and travel select committee member Ben Bradshaw.
Bradshaw, who thanked Javid for extending NHS Covid Passes to 12 to 15-year-olds for international travel, asked why the "draconian, costly and complex" rules were still in place, after the health secretary agreed the restrictions would be "pointless" once the Omicron variant became widespread in the UK.
In response, Javid said the justification for having the rules had been "minimised" given the new strain was "fast becoming the dominant variant in our capital city and spreading rapidly throughout the country".
"This is something that I have already raised with my colleagues in the Department for Transport, and I hope that we can act quickly," he added.
