Jet2 plc has extended its order with jet engine manufacturer CFM International, meaning its entire order book for nearly 150 new aircraft will be fitted with with CFM’s more fuel and carbon efficient Leap-1A engines.
The airline and operator has 98 new Airbus A320 and A321 neo-family aircraft on firm order, and options on another 48, which chief executive Steve Heapy has previously indicated he expects the firm to exercise in full to achieve its growth ambitions and to drive fleet renewal.
Deliveries are due in the period through to 2031. Jet2 placed an initial order with CFM back in March 2022 for engines to power up to 75 of these aircraft, 63 of which are firm orders. Its first Leap-powered aircraft entered service last month.
Jet2 on Monday (19 June) confirmed it had selected CFM to supply engines for another 71 aircraft, 35 of which are firm orders.
Executive chair Philip Meeson said the deal would "further develop" Jet2’s 20-year partnership with CFM, whom he said had been integral to the airline and operator’s success and growth.
"The introduction of the fuel efficient Leap engine in our fleet, combined with our major investment in UK sustainable aviation fuel production facilities, will help make our operations more sustainable and provide the best customer experience," said Meeson.
Gael Meheust, president and chief executive of CFM International, added: "We share with Jet2 the same ambition to invest in technologies which will make air transport even more sustainable in the coming years."
CFM and Jet2 claim the Leap engine offers 15% to 20% better fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions, as well as "significant" improvements in noise reduction compared with previous generation engines.
