Jet2holidays has defended its decision to sell tickets to marine amusement parks after Morrissey called on the tour operator to cut ties with venues over animal welfare concerns.
The Smiths frontman wrote a letter to Jet2holidays chief executive Steve Heapy urging him to stop collaborating with amusement parks such as Loro Parque in Tenerife.
“These watery hellholes can never come close to replicating the complex needs of marine animals,” Morrissey wrote on Monday (10 July).
"Orcas belong in the open ocean, where they can find food, socialise, and explore – all of which is impossible for them to do in a cramped, concrete tank."
The singer then proceeded to blast people who attend these shows – “they should get their heads checked – as well as those who profit from it.
“It’s never too late to do the right thing,” Morrissey added. “Be on the right side of history and cut ties with any facility that exploits these majestic animals.”
“We are aware of the debate surrounding such venues, and whilst there continues to be high customer demand, we recognise how critical it is that animal welfare standards are adhered to,” Jet2holidays said in a statement.
“It is important to note that we are committed to only working with venues that agree to uphold the highest standards.”
