Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway urged attendees at last night’s Association of Women Travel Executive awards to embrace their jobs and remember that “it’s about the journey”.
In an interview with AWTE chair Debbee Dale, Garraway was asked if she had any words of wisdom for the audience.
“I’m not sure about words of wisdom, but there was something my Mum always told me,” she said. “Don’t make your job your enemy. You wouldn’t be there if you didn’t love it – I’m always trying to do just that. It is about the journey - just enjoy it as you’re going along.”
She also urged delegates to remember that others also worry about their future careers – even seemingly successful TV personalities. “Tess Daly always says every year, I hope I get signed again, when of course she’s amazing. No-one else feels like they’ve got it sorted.”
When asked what her opinions about women in business were, Garraway admitted that she had a “unique non-representative perspective” at Global Radio, where she presents a daily show on Smooth Radio.
“[At Global] there are a number of strong women in strong positions, and breakfast TV makes an effort to have women in strong positions because the audience is largely female-focused,” she said, but added: “I do think there is a huge effort being made to change [the issue of the lack of women featuring on other TV news programmes].
Dale also quizzed Garraway as to whether she had ever believed she had really made it in her career. “I’m not sure about that,” she said, “but a couple of years ago I was on the Syrian border to see what became the first wave of Syrians coming through to seek shelter.
“It was really hairy; people were throwing stones as we were filming, and I was thinking what can I do? I had "Gangnam Style" on my phone, which I had been showing my children at home, and I played it, and all the kids started doing it – I thought, we’re in the middle of this war, and all these children are dancing to "Gangnam Style". I’m not sure if I thought I had made it then, but I thought, I’m here, in this incredible moment.”
