London City airport has become the first UK major airport to end luggage restrictions by scrapping the 100ml liquid rule.
The Newham hub announced on Monday (3 April) that customers will no longer need to remove their laptops and large bottles from their bags following the deployment of next generation security scanners.
Chief operating officer Alison FitzGerald said the new CT scanners will reduce “the stress and hassle” of the 100ml restrictions while providing “a much more efficient security operation.”
“We are really confident that this investment will make the experience of travelling through London City even better for the business and leisure passengers using the airport, to quickly and easily get to our many domestic and international destinations," she added.
London City – which is on track to reach four million passengers this year – was nevertheless pipped to the post by Teesside regional airport, which scrapped the 100ml rule in mid-March.
The deployment is part of a wider government push to end the rule – set in 2006 following a failed terrorist plot – by June 2024.
"We’re making sure that all major airports across the UK introduce a new generation of sophisticated security technology, and it’s great to see this being harnessed at London City Airport already,” said aviation minister Baroness Vere.
