Lufthansa will suspend its Liverpool and Bristol routes from February, cutting regional links to a number of long-haul connections through its Frankfurt hub.
The airline is the latest to be affected by a safety notice issued over some engines on its short-haul fleet, with with Wizz Air also heavily impacted.
Lufthansa will suspend flights from Liverpool on 2 February and Bristol a day later and has indicated they are unlikely to return. The airline blamed lack of aircraft for both decisions.
Lufthansa began flying to Liverpool in May 2022 and offers six services as week. A Liverpool airport spokesperson told the Liverpool Echo the route had been “performing well”.
The carrier has flown from Bristol since 2021. A Bristol airport spokesperson said the airport continued to offer connection options with Swiss and KLM as well as Aer Lingus.
Lufthansa told TTG: “Lufthansa is continuously evaluating and optimising its entire route network.
“Due to unscheduled maintenance work on Pratt & Whitney engines in the Lufthansa Airbus A320neo fleet, Lufthansa Airlines will have significantly fewer aircraft available next year than originally planned.
“The company has therefore decided to suspend some routes from February 2024 that have not shown a positive economic development in recent months. Lufthansa regrets this decision.”
