MSC Cruises has unveiled a new training scheme for its deck officers aiming to lower ship collisions with ocean animals such as whales and dolphins.
Carried out by MSC alongside marine conservation charity Orca, the online training course will focus on how to best avoid hitting marine mammals while sailing.
The course will initially be trialled by officers onboard MSC Bellissima, which is regularly sailing through the Pelagos Sanctuary, a marine protected area between Italy, Monaco and France that is home to several species.
“We are committed to supporting the health of our oceans and partnering with experts to introduce bespoke training and education is a further positive step forward,” said MSC vice-president of environmental operations and compliance captain Minas Myrtidis.
Once the trial is completed, MSC plans to extend the programme across its 21-vessel fleet, as well as MSC Euribia due to launch in June in Copenhagen.
Euribia will be MSC’s second ship to be powered by liquified natural gas (LNG). It will also feature energy efficiency measures such as waste management handling.
