New transport secretary Mark Harper and his department’s permanent secretaries will face questions from the Transport Committee for the first time on Wednesday (7 December).
MPs will question Harper, who took up his post in late October, on a range of issues relating to the DfT’s work, his priorities in his new role and the committee’s inquiries.
Issues the committee will raise include service cancellations by Northern Trains, Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express, as well as Network Rail’s planned engineering works on several major London routes over the Christmas holidays.
The cross-party committee may also seek answers on the department’s potentially crowded legislative agenda before the next general election.
There may also be questions regarding ministers’ roles in negotiating with trade unions and rail operators over forthcoming industrial action in mid-December and early January.
Harper will have big shoes to fill as he takes over from Huw Merriman – a staunch supporter of the travel industry during the pandemic – who was appointed transport minister earlier this year.
Merriman, MP for Bexhill and Battle, spent his time in the role highlighting issues impacting the travel industry during the pandemic.
