New Zealand has reopened is borders to international arrivals for the first time since the onset of Covid-19-induced lockdowns in March 2020.
The destination will now accept all visitors, including those from non-visa waiver countries and students. Prime minister Jacinda Ardern described the move as an "enormous moment”.
"This is great news to the tourism industry and economy as we approach spring and summer with people from the northern hemisphere booking their winter holidays," the country’s government said.
"We have heard optimistic messages from tourism operators who are ready to welcome back international visitors from all over the world."
The country has also reopened to cruise ships, but passengers will be asked for proof of vaccination.
Brad Bennetts, head of sales and business development for APT and Travelmarvel, which operates a number of tours in New Zealand, said the brands have seen an increase in momentum, with bookings to the destination doubling over the last four weeks.
"With a 95 year legacy of providing tours to New Zealand, the destination is an important one for APT and Travelmarvel, so we, like our guests, are thrilled that borders are reopening fully," he added.
"Our web traffic demonstrably spiked this week as the opening date drew closer – this is a great moment for agents to capitalise on the interest and push New Zealand to their databases."
