Norwegian Cruise Line will abandon its facemask requirement on US sailings from 1 March.
NCL will then stipulate only that it recommends mask wearing indoors and outdoors if social distancing cannot be maintained. Rules will remain in place for European sailings.
NCL said US sailings were operating with fully vaccinated crew and guests aged five and over, “therefore face coverings are not required while onboard”.
It added: “However, we recognize the added protections provided when wearing a mask covering and recommend that all guests do so onboard when indoors, except when actively eating or drinking, or seated at a table in a dining setting, or when in their stateroom.
“The decision to wear a mask covering when onboard is at the discretion of each guest.”
NCL said it was bound by local government regulations in Europe.
From 1 March, guests on all sailings will be required to provide proof of a negative antigen or PCR test by a verified third party or via a medically supervised home test.
The line is also limiting the number of unvaccinated children aged four and under to 5% of all passengers on each sailing.
