The Foreign Office has issued a new travel warning for Peru after parts of capital Lima were placed under a fresh state of emergency due to a spike in crime.
The Peruvian government declared earlier this week a new state of emergency for the districts of San Juan de Lurigancho and San Martin de Porras as well as the Piura region.
“You should be especially vigilant and take particular care to avoid all areas of large gatherings, demonstrations and protests,” said the FCDO.
“If possible, you should remain in a safe place, follow the authorities’ advice, and monitor local media, including social media channels.”
Authorities have also urged Brits to liaise with their airlines and tour operators as political unrest – which calls for president Dina Boularte to step down and for elections to be held – could lead to delays and disruption to travel.
“You should ensure you travel with a sufficient supply of food, water, cash in local currency and personal medication, and allow extra time to reach your destination,” it said.
