Members of the British Airline Pilots’ Association (Balpa) have elected former British Airways pilot Martin Chalk as the union’s new general secretary.
Chalk has already been serving as Balpa’s acting general secretary for the past three months, but now takes up permanent leadership of the union.
“I am proud to be a professional pilot – the most successful profession, if the measure of success is the number of times we achieve our primary goal of a safe flight,” said Chalk.
“The members, representatives and staff of Balpa still combine to ensure every flight is a safe flight; they unite to ensure every professional pilot works under an agreement which is fair and rewards the education, skill and experience required and they together represent the very best of our profession to the world.”
Chalk has also held leadership roles at international aviation bodies, including the European Cockpit Association (ECA) and International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA).
Balpa’s previous general secretary Brian Strutton stepped down in July 2021.
