French expedition line Ponant has revealed a concept for a new emission-free cruise ship.
The Swap2Zero concept combines six new sustainable technologies, such as a sail power system and hull, photovoltaic panels, a low temperature fuel cell and a high temperature fuel cell, onboard carbon capture technology and a bespoke energy management system.
The sailing ship, which will be ready by 2030, aims to be a catalyst for new energy solutions for the line and the broader industry.
Whilst Ponant has chosen to partner with naval architecture firm Stirling Design International, discussions are ongoing to select the shipyard for the delivery of the vessel.
"By 2030, our future ship aims to have zero greenhouse gas emissions when sailing, manoeuvring, in port or at anchor," said Herve Gastinel, chief executive of Ponant.
"Renewable energy supplied by the wind and sun will be combined with low-carbon non-fossil energy associated with fuel cells."
