Portuguese baggage handlers will walk out over the August bank holiday weekend after the country’s civil aviation workers’ union (Sintac) issued a new strike notice.
The action will see workers employed by baggage handler Portway strike over 26-28 August, affecting Portugal’s four main airports – Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Funchal.
Unions, though, have called off separate action by civil aviation workers over 19-21 August amid a row over pay, conditions and safety.
Talks had been due to take place earlier this week to negotiate a minimum level of service to be maintained throughout the first of the two strikes.
During the two-day meeting at Portugal’s directorate general for employment and labour relations, Sintac and Portugal’s commercial aviation staff union (Sqac) reached an agreement with airport operators ANA and Vinci sufficient to call off the strike.
Portuguese title Dinheiro Vivo reports the talks led to an understanding over an interim salary increase and a pledge to deal with a shortage of operational resources.
