A Royal Caribbean International ship has docked in Grenada to deliver essential relief aid to the outlying islands which were devastated by Hurricane Beryl.
The line’s Rhapsody of the Seas ship has brought essential supplies – including 15 tons of fuel – and more than 2,300 passengers to boost the local economy.
The 2,416-passenger vessel is currently operating a programme of seven-day round-trip Southern Caribbean cruises from San Juan, but Royal confirmed the ship adjusted its route to provide humanitarian aid to "those in need".
Before the ship docked, Grenada said: “The arrival of Rhapsody of the Seas demonstrates the resilience and unity of our island nation.
“The ship’s crew will be delivering much-needed supplies, including 15 tons of fuel, to aid in the recovery efforts.”
It added: “This substantial donation of fuel will be instrumental in powering essential services showcasing the strong partnership and support from Royal Caribbean during this challenging time.”
Randall Dolland, chair of the Grenada Tourism Authority, said the island is “incredibly grateful” for Royal Caribbean and other partners for their support.
“Their assistance in our time of need, combined with the visitor arrivals, underscores the depth of the partnership we share,” he added.
“This is a clear signal to the world that Grenada is open for business and welcoming visitors with open arms. Together, we will rebuild stronger than ever.”
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said: "Due to Hurricane Beryl’s impact in the Caribbean, we will be adjusting our route to help provide humanitarian aid to the island of Grenada for those in need.”
The Foreign Office updated its advisory for Jamaica on Monday (8 July) after the hurricane arrived in the island country last week. “There are disruptions to services island-wide, including to airports,” the FCDO said.
“There is also a risk of flash flooding and land/mudslides. You should follow and monitor local and international weather updates from the US National Hurricane Center and follow the advice of local authorities and your tour operator, including any evacuation orders.”
