Ryanair has signed a deal with oil and gas company OMV for a supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
SAF averages 70% fewer greenhouse gas emissions when it fully replaces conventional kerosene, and Ryanair will receive supplies at airports in Austria, Germany and Romania.
The deal amounts to 160,000 tonnes or 53 million gallons over the next eight years. UK commercial aviation fuel usage was 12.4 million tonnes in 2019, and the government estimates it will need five million tonnes of SAF by 2050 to meet its net zero target as laid out in its Jet Zero Strategy.
Ryanair said the OMV deal would save the equivalent emissions of 25,000 flights from Dublin to Vienna.
The airline’s director of sustainability Thomas Fowler said: “SAF plays a key role in our Pathway to Net Zero decarbonisation strategy in which we have committed to increasing our use of SAF over the coming years – a commitment that this deal with OMV will help move further forward.”
