The Seychelles has lifted its state of emergency after the country’s main island of Mahe was rocked by an industrial blast and heavy rains earlier this week.
President Wavel Ramkalawan announced on Friday (8 January) that all services and activities had resumed as normal in the late hours of Thursday (7 December).
Nevertheless, he said the industrial area of Providence – where the explosion took place – would remain “a controlled area” with limited public access.
“Members of the public are reminded to follow all instructions from the police, as the emergency services and relevant authorities continue their work,” Ramkalawan added.
The Foreign Office has urged Brits to “exercise caution on roads” due to the heavy rainfall and avoid swimming in northeastern coastal areas of the island following an overflow of the sewage system.
“Flights to and from the country continue to operate and visitors arriving or departing are able to travel to the airport,” the FCDO warning read. “You should follow advice from the local authorities as the situation progresses.”
