The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for South Korea acknowledging the country’s decision to ease its Covid travel protocols.
From 3 September, travellers to South Korea will no longer need to present a negative pre-departure PCR test for entry to the country.
However, all arrivals will still be required to submit a health questionnaire and complete a PCR test at an airport clinic within 24 hours of landing in South Korea, remaining in their accommodation until they receive a negative result.
The relaxation of covid entry requirements comes as South Korea reports a downward trend in daily case numbers, with 100,000 new infections per day compared with 180,000 in mid-August.
Reuters reports South Korean health minister Lee Ki-il as saying: “The weekly number of infections has declined for the first time in nine weeks and the virus is showing signs of slowing down."
South Korea still requires face masks to be worn in public indoor settings and for those testing positive for Covid to isolate for seven days.
The updated FCDO advice reads: "As of September 3, 2022, travellers arriving in South Korea are no longer required to provide a negative pre-departure Covid test certificate.
"All arrivals, including children aged five and under, and regardless of nationality and length of stay, are required to take a PCR test within 24 hours of entering South Korea. All foreign short-term travellers are advised to take a PCR test at an airport clinic."
