The new government should make Scotland a sustainable travel leader, reform business rates and ask the EU for greater freedom of movement, the SPAA has said in its election manifesto.
The manifesto calls for the building of a sustainable aviation fuel industry in Scotland, electric shore power for cruise ships and support for high street agencies via rates reform and the Apprenticeship Levy.
The SPAA also wants more cooperation with the EU on e-visa regimes and youth mobility agreements. It wants the government to use the 2026 review of the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement “to reduce barriers to tourism and business travel”.
SPAA president Jacqueline Dobson said: “The Scottish and UK governments need to work together with industry leaders to create a solid base for a sustainable future.
“Travel and tourism are essential to Scotland’s prosperity, not only providing vital connectivity for businesses and communities, but also enhancing the well-being and cultural aspirations of Scots.
“The SPAA is committed to working closely with the governments and industry stakeholders to promote and support our sector, which was severely impacted by the pandemic.
"We urge all candidates standing in the general election to recognise the importance of travel and tourism to Scotland and to support the recommendations in the manifesto.”
The SPAA claims travel contributes more than £3.6 billion to the Scottish economy and supports more than 30,000 jobs.
