Forecasts of heavy rain and strong winds in the Canaries, Madeira and Portugal’s Azores archipelago have prompted the Foreign Office to update its travel advice for the Atlantic islands.
Spain’s meteorological service on Monday (5 June) said the weather front could bring winds of up to 90km/h while persistent rain could cause flash flooding. Orange warnings for wind are in place for La Palma and Tenerife, and yellow warnings for large waves. There are also active yellow warnings in place for wind and rain across the entire region.
"Probable heavy rains on the mountainous islands, more likely on the southern and western slopes," read the forecast. "Strong wind and very strong gusts in high areas and southeast and northwest slopes of the mountainous islands, especially intense on the peaks of Tenerife and La Palma, where speeds of 90 km/h could be reached."
Portugal’s IPMA meteorological agency, meanwhile, has issued red warnings for southern coastal areas of Madeira and the island’s mountainous regions where winds could hit 110km/h. Rain, it said, will be "strong and persistent". Orange warnings are also in place for the north coast of Madeira and the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, with orange and yellow warnings issued too across parts of the Azores.
The Foreign Office has issued new advice for both Spain and Portugal, warning of heavy rain and strong winds in the Canaries until Thursday (8 June) and of the same for Madeira, Porto Santo and the Azores until Tuesday (6 June).
Travellers are advised to monitor updates from the Spanish Meteorological Agency and Portugal’s Institute for Sea and Atmosphere. The advice added: "You should check with your tour operator or accommodation provider before you travel and follow the instructions of local authorities."
