Greece will spearhead discussions around empowering local communities, mitigating damage to eco-systems and the role people can play in nature conservation at next month’s Abta Travel Convention.
Fifteen delegates from across the industry, including from tourism boards and tour operators, will participate in Greece’s second Sustainable Travel “Agora” in Costa Navarino on 8 October.
The agora, or “assembly”, will be moderated by Abta’s head of sustainability Carol Rose, with discussions centred around a title of: Balancing Act: Integrating Nature Protection with Responsible Tourism.
Elena Skarveli, Greek National Tourism Organisation director, UK and Ireland, said: “Our Sustainable Travel Agora meetings are open to sustainable tourism leaders from the British travel industry as we connect and collaborate and ultimately drive change.
“Inspired by the ancient Greek agora – where public assemblies took place around a marketplace – it was where democracy prevailed, and all ideas were discussed openly among Athenians to tackle a range of issues.”
Skarveli added: “[Sustainability] is an area we know many delegates are navigating, often needing guidance and inspiration, so I am looking forward to a lively, challenging and engaging discussion with my industry peers.
"I know many of them have such interesting case studies to share and together, we can shine a spotlight on best practices and take them away into our own organisations to make a difference.”
TTG Media chief executive Daniel Pearce will attend the second Sustainable Travel Agora in Costa Navarino after attending last year’s edition in Crete where delegates discussed how the industry could step up its response to the climate emergency by working together more closely to find solutions.
“TTG Media has been an active and engaged member of the Sustainable Travel Agora since our inception providing crucial insights and best practice scenarios for us all to absorb and develop," said Skarveli. "This level of engagement and collaboration exemplifies what the agora is all about."
