Thousands of people were left stranded on Tuesday (25 July) after around 70 flights to and from Gatwick were cancelled due to poor weather across Europe, as well as staffing issues at the airport.
“We are experiencing disruption this evening due to poor weather conditions across Europe causing air traffic control restrictions, and last-minute staff shortages at Gatwick’s control tower,” said the airport in a tweet.
According to reports in the national media, around 30 flights were cancelled by easyJet – the airport’s biggest operator – with Vueling, Norwegian Air and Wizz Air among others forced to ground services. Some flights were diverted to other airports. Two inbound easyJet flights were cancelled on Wednesday morning (26 July).
"Thousands of travellers will be frustrated at these flight cancellations at Gatwick, which have the potential to leave people’s holiday plans, which they have worked hard and saved for, in ruins,” said Which? Travel editor Rory Boland.
Boland urged customers to challenge airlines, as carriers could use the disruption caused by the extreme weather as an excuse.
“In the past we’ve seen some airlines routinely failing to meet their legal obligations to customers and that’s why the Civil Aviation Authority must be given the powers it needs to take action against airlines when they break the law in the event of disruption – including the ability to fine companies directly,” he added.
TTG has approached Gatwick for further comment on the disruption.
