The travel industry has given transport secretary Grant Shapps’ decision to run for Conservative Party leader a lukewarm reception, questioning his ability to deliver the change needed to solve the country’s ills.
Confirming his candidacy, Shapps pledged to deliver on the goals of Johnson, but end a period of "often-distracted" government.
Environment secretary George Eustice said all of the potential leaders have "got their strengths," but Shapps "is the best man" to take up the role at this particular point.
However, some figures in the travel industry did not share Eustice’s view, including Swords Travel owner Mark Swords, who blamed Shapps for turning the travel industry into a "mess".
"Deliver? What exactly? Our entire transport system is a mess, due to massive neglect and mess you left us in during Covid." he added. "Let’s hope you don’t get in, otherwise there will be nothing left of this country."
Elsewhere, G Adventures managing director EMEA Brian Young said: "There is the problem, that the most important skill you need, which you lacked all through the pandemic, was you didn’t listen."
Derek Jones, chief executive of Der Touristik UK, said: "I think he should have recognised the unique challenges faced by the travel sector during Covid and his failure to respond appropriately are to blame for the current issues."
Despite the industry’s concerns, Shapps has been backed by a number of political figures, including aviation and maritime minister Robert Courts, who said he has managed to turn around a "struggling" department with "outstanding competence".
Transport minister Trudy Harrison said: "I’ve worked with Grant in government, and seen him deliver in tough circumstances. Unshackled by Europe, I know he will take our country forward to its best days."
Dr James Davies, Vale of Clwyd MP, said Shapps is a "proven campaigner" and knows what it takes to win a general election. "That’s why I’m backing him to be our next leader and prime minister," he added.
Meanwhile, MP for Peterborough Paul Bristow said Shapps was one of the party’s best communicators. "Grant is a seasoned campaigner and has the experience we need to take us forward to victory in the next election," he said.
