Rail minister Huw Merriman, who was lauded during the pandemic for his support of the travel industry, has confirmed he will not stand for re-election in July and will depart Westminster.
Merriman, the Conservative MP for Bexhill and Battle in East Sussex, made a name for himself during Covid through his role as chair of parliament’s transport committee.
At the time, Aito chair Chris Rowles said: "He simply ‘gets’ travel, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises and the huge challenges we’ve faced over the past several years."
He was subsequently appointed to a ministerial role attached to the Department for Transport in October 2022. However, he was given a UK rail brief rather than an aviation or outbound travel-focused post.
Merriman confirmed his intention not to seek re-election on Thursday (23 May). "I leave with a heavy heart," he said.
"Transport has been my passion throughout my time in parliament. I am grateful to have served for seven years on the transport select committee [and] I’ve loved my time as rail minister.
"In each of these roles, l’ve seen the best of our amazing transport industry and community; from private and public sector and civil service.
"Thank you to all of the amazing people I have met on my journey. I will miss everything but, as I sit in the political departure lounge, I am looking forward to a new journey (whatever that might be)."
Merriman also thanked prime minister Rishi Sunak for trusting him with a ministerial portfolio, adding: "He will always have my full support."
