Tui has cancelled all holidays to Sri Lanka up to and including 31 May after the Foreign Office strengthened its travel advisory against all but essential travel to the country owing to "ongoing political and economic instability".
The company will be contacting all impacted customers in departure date order to discuss their options. The advice does not apply to customers transiting through Sri Lanka’s international airport and customers currently in-resort can continue their holiday as planned.
A spokesperson for Tui said: "We will continue to monitor the situation and update customers should there be any further updates. We would like to thank our customers for their understanding at this time."
The move follows several weeks of unrest in the country, which led to prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigning on Monday (9 May) following a mass cabinet resignation. Several people have died in clashes, and hundreds are reported to have been injured.
