Tui’s stance on selling captive whale and dolphin attractions drew another protest, the second in a month, at Abta’s Travel Matters conference in London on Tuesday (3 December).
A protestor from Peta – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – took to the stage during a panel discussion featuring Tui UK and Ireland’s head of public affairs Nathan Stower.
"Tui, you are one of the last remaining travel providers in the UK still profiting from this cruelty,” shouted the Peta protester, who held up a banner that read: "Orcas matter! Drop marine parks.
“Please do the right thing – stand up for the animals, stand up for the orcas, the whales and the dolphins that are still suffering in captivity right now," the protestor added.
TTG approached Tui for comment, while Abta declined to issue a statement.
Last month, two Peta activists carrying similar signs protested a sustainability debate at WTM London featuring Tui’s chief strategy officer and chief executive of holiday experiences, Peter Krueger.
Meanwhile, airport operators were slammed after a poster campaign urging holidaymakers not to visit marine parks featuring captive whales and dolphins was pulled.
Whale and Dolphin Conservation’s Don’t Go to the Show campaign appeared briefly at Birmingham airport and had been due to run at Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports this summer.
Protests targeting Tui have escalated since the spring when both easyJet holidays and Jet2holidays said they would not offer these types of excursions to their clients.
