Protests following the ousting of Peruvian president Pedro Castillo last week are "escalating fast and disrupting travel plans", the Foreign Office has warned.
The FCDO said following a change of government last Wednesday (7 December), which saw Dina Boluarte succeed Castillo after he was impeached, the political situation in the country had become increasingly volatile.
"There have been widespread protests, some of which are violent and can escalate quickly," said the FCDO in a fresh update to its travel advice on Tuesday morning (13 December).
"This has resulted in the disruption of travel, with several road blockades and some airport closures, including Arequipa."
The FCDO said road blockades were disrupting bus tour routes in the south of the country, while some flights in and out of Cusco – which serves the popular Inca Trail to Machu Picchu – have been cancelled.
Arequipa, meanwhile, is the country’s second largest city after capital Lima. A 60-day state of emergency has been declared in some provinces.
Anyone in the country is advised to follow local authority advice, monitor local media closely, and avoid large gatherings and protests.
