This week’s planned strike action by Wizz Air ground handlers at Luton airport has been called off "to allow last-minute peace talks", although union leaders have warned that unless there is progress in the coming days, it won’t hesitate to go ahead with further action fixed for next week.
More than 100 Unite union members, employed by GH London at Luton on a Wizz air contract, had been due to walk out for four days, starting Wednesday (13 September). However, Unite said following a last-ditch offer of talks by GH, it had called off this week’s action "as an act of good faith".
The union, though, stressed that unless there was a breakthrough in the talks concerning a dispute over low pay and industrial relations, a further four days of strikes beginning 20 September would go ahead as planned.
Unite regional officer Jeff Hodge said: “Unite welcomes the opportunity to sit down with GH London and the opportunity to hammer out a solution to this dispute. If GH London is not prepared to address its serious shortcomings, however, the strikes scheduled for next week, which will cause serious disruption to flights, will go ahead as planned."
TTG has attempted to approach GH London for comment.
