Wizz Air will launch flights to Romanian second city and “cultural capital” Iasi from Southend next August.
The four-times weekly route will get under way on 1 August 2020, flying on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
Fares lead in from £26.99. Wizz said Iasi in Romania’s Moldavia region was “a perfect city break destination”.
The city, dubbed by Wizz Romania’s “cultural capital”, is famed for its architecture and also known as the “city of a hundred churches”.
It also has a thriving food, drink and nightlife culture thanks to its large university population.
Owain Jones, Wizz Air UK managing director, said: “We are delighted to add another exciting route to a perfect city break destination. Iasi is a lively eastern Romanian city, packed with cultural delights and nature attractions, and is the newest destination in Wizz Air’s extensive network from the UK.”
It comes after Wizz last month announced three new eastern European routes from Southend, flying to Vilnius, Bucharest and Sibiu.
Glyn Jones, chief executive of Southend airport operator Stobart Aviation, added: “It is fantastic news Wizz Air is immediately looking to grow the number of routes it is operating from our airport.
"The initial flights, which start this month, have already proved popular, and passengers will have even more choice in terms of flying to central and eastern Europe next summer.
