Omega Breaks expands astronomy tours with new five-day UK option

Omega Breaks has added a new five-day ‘Scotland Dark Skies & Northern Lights’ tour to its programme of astronomy themed breaks.

Scotland is the perfect choice for this itinerary as it offers longer periods of darkness and a greater frequency of clear nights. Combine this with prime areas for viewing and less light pollution and it makes it one of the best places in the UK to search for the Aurora Borealis.

The trip is accompanied by esteemed astronomer Peter Lawrence from the BBC’s The Sky at Night throughout. He will be on hand with informative presentations on the night sky, advice on viewing this amazing spectacle and guidance on mastering the art of taking impressive photos of the twinkling celestial sphere above.

The base for the tour is Aberdeen. After dinner on nights two and three, guests head to Knockburn Loch. As all eyes look to the dark skies in search of the playful streaks of light that constantly change above, Pete will share his thoughts and knowledge to ensure everyone gets the very best from the experience. There is also time to explore this historic city and take in the local sights, with visits to Stonehaven and Ballater included.

Claire Dutton, trade sales manager for Omega Breaks comments: “This is the first time we’ve featured a UK short break within our astronomy programme, and it is a great way to tick of this bucket list experience. The new tour complements our existing offering of UK Northern Lights evening flights, Iceland options and of course our eclipse adventures.

“Scientists are predicting there will be more UK sightings of the magical light show over the next year, making it an ideal time to spot them closer to home. With solar activity at the peak of its 11-year cycle, we could be in for some of the best displays in over a decade.”

Departing on 27 February 2025, this five-day tour costs from £949pp including return flights to Aberdeen from Gatwick or Heathrow, transfers, four nights at the Leonard Hotel in Aberdeen with breakfast and dinner, two nights watching for the Northern Lights at Knockburn Loch with presentations by Pete Lawrence and refreshment, excursions to Stonehaven and Ballater, free time in Aberdeen and a farewell gathering at the hotel with Pete. Based on two sharing. (£999pp from Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham or Norwich airports).
