If it’s experience you’re after, Acomb Travel has years of it. Owner Eric Walton has been running the business since establishing it in 1977 while the longest-serving member of staff Avril Barrett has worked there for 30 years.
Even newbie Tracey Hogson who joined three years ago has 36 years’ experience as an agent.
With this knowledge the team of three sales staff are able to ensure customer satisfaction while the exceedingly rare practice of paying a full wage instead of target-based commission payments means they are motivated not by their own needs and desires but the customers’.
At-home visits and personal ticket drops are a matter of course.
But it is the efforts of Sam Walton as business development manager that brings the point of difference. Having joined the York branch of the GiveBackWorks networking group she goes to a monthly meeting along with the other 250 members all keen to seek mutually beneficial business opportunities.
Speaking at ladies’ lunch clubs further puts Acomb at the heart of the community while being a member of Visit York and setting up a stand at York University’s Science Park on occasional days means the agency is often first choice in the community.
Not content with that alone, Walton has delivered 3,000 promotional leaflets by hand as part of a planned 10,000 drop at the weekends, allowing her to chat to members of the public as she meets them.
Partnerships with Hob Moor Community Primary School and the Ebor Academy also allow the agency to teach children about the world of travel and careers in it from an early age.
The soon-to-be refurbished shop also boats one other asset, Jetset Jodie - a mannequin who lives in the store window and travels around the world in differently-themed displays. Local mums even bring their children to see the popular window to find out where Jodie has popped up next!
