Travel Counsellors has been pioneering the use of homeworkers to sell holidays since 1994 and now has a network of more than 1,500 self-employed agents working across seven countries including 900 homeworkers in the UK.

The firm is set to expand further after enjoying a “record-breaking” recruitment drive in the first two months of this year.

Travel Counsellors last year moved from Bolton to a new headquarters in the Trafford City development in Greater Manchester having outgrown its old offices. Travel Counsellors now has a team of 250 head office staff supporting their homeworkers around the world.

Recent developments include the introduction of a 24/7-duty office, which is based in head office and offers round-the-clock support to Travel Counsellors’ customers when they need help while on holiday if there is an emergency or alternative travel plans have to be made.

Travel Counsellors also ran a “Trusted Travel” marketing campaign during the peak-booking season after Christmas. This emphasised the advantages to holidaymakers of getting advice from independent travel professionals about the best destinations for them, as well as stressing the better value for money and reassurance of booking with an agent.

The company continues to build up the range of travel products on offer to its Travel Counsellors. Over the last two years, the company has been establishing “a network of global relationships with DMCs (destination management company) to create authentic tailor-made land experiences”.

This means that Travel Counsellors is now selling more of its own contracted holidays using the company Atol than third-party products.

Travel Counsellors supports its agents by investing in enhanced digital assets and also business development, which includes “one on one” coaching for homeworkers.

The biggest investment has been into the inhouse Phenix dynamic packaging system, which now features the ability to load DMC products into itineraries.

Improved management information capabilities also help agents to produce personalised marketing campaigns for their clients.

Other marketing efforts include the production of a digital customer magazine every three months, which is regularly updated.
