App-driven OTA My Kind of Cruise plans to debut in the US and introduce river product over the next 12 months in its quest to become “the biggest cruise retailer in the world”.
Launched by Sefton Monk and David Rowlinson in January 2022, the company currently offers 20 ocean cruise lines, and is now seeking further investment to expand.
Monk told TTG around half of the app’s 315,000 active users are new to cruise, while 35% are repeat bookers.
“Considering two million people from the UK and Ireland cruise, I’m happy with that [new-to-cruise figure],” said Monk. “Cruise lines recognise we can bring in a different demographic.
He confirmed: "We want to be the biggest cruise retailer in the world.”
Monk continued: “We’re still the world’s only app that allows you to book a cruise, but we’ll not be the only one for ever. The more successful we are, the more people will look at us. We’re bringing a brand-new audience to the cruise industry – we’re aiming as high as possible.
"We’ve just experienced an absolutely incredible month, smashing all records and nearly doubling our bookings compared to January last year."
Co-founder Rowlinson added: "Royal Caribbean International, P&O Cruises, Cunard, Princess Cruises and MSC Cruises are doing exceptionally well, not just sailing from the UK, but also from all around Europe and the US."
Ahead of the app’s entry into the river cruise market, Monk and Rowlinson have agreed commercial terms with AmaWaterways, Scenic, Emerald, Riviera Travel and Uniworld.
All five river lines are “ready to go live” on the app, confirmed Monk, who has previously worked for Sky Store, Now TV and the Discovery Channel.
When asked how new-to-cruise customers learn about cruise lines, Monk said: "It’s like when you go to Amazon, you don’t go to chat. It’s a really intuitive easy booking experience.”
