Iceland’s Blue Lagoon has reopened after two months of inactivity caused by a series of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions over the past few weeks.
The geothermal facility has confirmed all operational units are now open to the public, with the daily operating hours adjusted to be between 11am and 8pm.
“The reopening is a collaborative effort with local authorities, ensuring ongoing safety in light of recent seismic and volcanic events,” the Blue Lagoon said in a statement on Wednesday (10 January). “In addition, experts are diligently monitoring the situation.”
The spa was forced to shut down in mid-November following high levels of volcanic activity along Iceland’s southwesterly Reykjanes peninsula, which is also home to the country’s only international airport – Keflavik.
It briefly reopened on 18 December, but had to close less than 24 hours later due to new volcanic activity.
