Iceland’s Blue Lagoon has been forced to shut down again just a few days after its reopening due to increased volcanic and seismic activity.
The geothermal facility announced on Sunday (14 January) it would be closed for the next two days following a volcanic eruption south-east of Hagafell mountain.
“We took the precautionary measure of evacuating all our operational units,” the Blue Lagoon said. “Consequently, we will remain closed until Tuesday, 16 January.”
The spa assured all visitors with bookings during the closure period would be contacted, while urging those wishing to modify or cancel their bookings to use the booking portal.
“As always, we follow the safety guidelines and recommendations of the authorities and will continue working closely with them, monitoring the progress of events,” the facility said.
The spa has been open on and off for the last two months following high levels of volcanic activity along Iceland’s south-western Reykjanes peninsula, which is home to the country’s only international airport, Keflavik.
Blue Lagoon was initially shut down in mid-November before reopening on 18 December. Unfortunately, operations were allowed for less than 24 hours due to new volcanic activity.
