‘Statistically I shouldn’t be a success: that’s why TTG 30 Under 30 makes me proud’

Ashleigh St Hill, senior account manager with Finn Partners, has overcome the odds to build a shining career in digital travel marketing

Travel wasn’t the original plan for Ashleigh St Hill, who initially flirted with the idea of a career in law. “I did an internship with a law firm in Temple, probably inspired by watching Suits,” she laughs. “The atmosphere was not what I expected and I realised I wanted to do something more creative.”

Spending two months in Japan as part of a post-school gap year fuelled this desire, after she blogged about her experiences.

On her return, she looked at apprenticeships as a way to combine learning with practical experience, and ended up with nine offers on the table. She picked Cranberry Panda, a recruitment agency working with luxury fashion e-commerce brands.

“Even though I was an apprentice, they promoted me quickly and I was running the social media desk independently,” she says. “I was thrown in at the deep end, with exposure to some cool brands such as Hunter Boots and Fenwick. I billed in excess of £90,000 for the company in my first year.”

Ashleigh moved to Silverdoor marketing agency, before taking what she describes as a “leap of faith” to use her network and start freelancing to source her own clients.

“I was very transparent in the early days, charging minimal fees, but my clients knew I was building my business, ALS/LDN.”

She taught herself the basics of setting up a company from scratch and the client management side of things. “I had to fill in the gaps as I went,” she recalls. “If I didn’t know how to do something, I found out how to do it.”

One of Ashleigh’s first clients was Nobody’s Child, which opened her eyes to the power of influencer marketing for the first time.

Other clients including the Pharmacist Beauty and Kalmar Lifestyle followed, but it was securing professional hair stylist Lee Stafford that propelled her into a different league. “He’s a big household name, and I was doing all his social. I was so naïve at the beginning of setting up ALS/LDN, if I’d known how challenging freelancing was going to be, I’d have never chucked myself in. But I’m so proud of what I achieved.”

Although the beauty and influencer aspects were a fun part of the brief, the most fulfilling part of the partnership was promoting Lee Stafford Education.

“Lee was building his own academy and he used to talk at colleges to inspire younger people,” Ashleigh says. “That was my journey – I didn’t go to uni – so it was my way of giving back.”

After the birth of her son Noah in May 2021, she tried juggling the business with childcare but found she was stretched too thin: “I wasn’t comfortable outsourcing because the clients were buying my expertise, but all the fun of content creation was being swallowed by the demands of admin and client retention. I couldn’t do it all, and be there for my family.”

In August 2022, Ashleigh joined communications experts Finn Partners, working on its wide portfolio of travel accounts. “I accidentally stumbled into travel,” she admits. “But I’ve grown to love it, and digital marketing and social media go hand in hand with travel. You can create beautiful emotive travel stories through visual content.”

She’s not mourning her decision to mothball her business because the results she’s achieved for clients including Visit Malta, St Kitts Tourism and Tourism Ireland have convinced them to follow her lead when it comes to social.

“Social is a community game and a numbers game – I’ve increased Visit Malta’s Facebook following from 125,000 to nearly 1.1 million – and that’s been so fulfilling to do.”

Her entry into the 2023-2024 30 Under 30 cemented that feeling of pride in how she’s come. “When you consider that I had a challenging upbringing for various reasons, I’m from an ethnic minority background, I’m a care leaver, I didn’t go to university and I’m now a full-time working mother, statistically I shouldn’t succeed. But I’ve grabbed every opportunity and worked hard, and I’m proud that I can now give my son everything that I missed out on growing up.”
