"At the end of a cruise there is nothing like realising you never used your credit card once," says agent David Smith, fresh from a fam trip with Emerald Cruises to discover 100-passenger yacht Emerald Azzurra
Emerald Cruises took a handful of key agents for a spin in the cruise line’s first luxury ocean yacht, Emerald Azzurra, at the end of March. The group sampled part of the eight-day Ionian Sea Adventure, which explores Capri, Sorrento and Amalfi, before travelling around the Ionian Sea, transiting the Corinth Canal and winding up in the historic city of Athens.
One of the attendees, David Smith, managing director, The Cruise Line, winners of Luxury Cruise Agency of the Year at the TTG Luxury Awards 2023, reflects on his first-time experience sailing with Emerald Cruises.
“We’ve been promoting Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara since the itineraries launched, but this was the first time I’d ventured onboard. It struck me that the yacht has a real hotel feel.
“The tour of Ravello and the Amalfi Coast was a highlight – such a beautiful place, the photos do not do it justice.
“We also thought the tour guide for Naples was excellent; she was friendly and knowledgeable about the city and surrounding areas.
“The food was also a high point; there wasn’t one meal we didn’t enjoy. The staff were accommodating and had no problem changing or tailoring the menu on request. The balcony suite accommodation was spotlessly clean, with a surprising amount of storage. The long balcony allowed for more than enough space to sit outside with a drink and a good book.
“We’d recommend cruise agents sell ahead for the peak season, especially if clients are interested in exploring the Mediterranean. The yacht is also ideal for a spot of island hopping in the Caribbean and is highly recommended if you have clients looking for a small-ship, yacht-style cruise. In terms of upselling, the all-inclusive package is definitely recommended – there’s nothing like ending your cruise and realising you never once used your credit card.”
Danny Joel, UK sales manager for the south, at Scenic & Emerald Cruises, hosted the fam trip and shares his insights.
“Emerald Cruises yachts showcase warm weather destinations with freedom of choice at the centre of their ethos. Because of their smaller size (100 passengers), the yachts can reach hidden gems, such as Rovinj, Croatia and the heart of Venice, that are unavailable to larger ships.
“Our second ocean yacht, Emerald Sakara, is set to be joining the fleet in August. The only real difference between Emerald Azzura, which launched last year, and Emerald Sakara is the onboard art. Both yachts offer the same variety of onboard facilities, fine dining and curated excursions that the agents experienced. They both have the flair and facilities that define Emerald Cruises’ luxury, including the infinity-style Aqua Pool, infrared sauna, as well as an array of marina toys, paddle boards and snorkelling equipment.
“After making its debut with the eight-day Ionian Sea Adventure sailing from Athens to Rome on 5 August this year, Emerald Sakara will operate a summer season in the Mediterranean and Adriatic alongside Emerald Azzurra. November will see both yachts cross the Atlantic to spend winter in the Caribbean, and also Central and South America. We are getting more agents on board than ever this year, and have launched dedicated new training on how to sell voyages aboard Emerald Cruises’ yachts.”
Book it: A seven-night Ionian Sea Adventure starts from £3,926pp, based on two sharing, and includes transfers, excursions, meals, plus drinks with lunch and dinner onboard. Flights cost extra.
Training: A new agent training webinar will be released on Wednesday 10 May at 9.30am and agents can sign up to attend here. A Mediterranean webinar is available for agents to view here.
