For healing waters: Buxton Crescent

At this grand hotel, which opened last year and is housed in a beautiful Georgian building, clients can relax in the warm-water springs that have drawn people to Buxton since Roman times. The hotel’s spa offers a range of hydrotherapy treatments, with three pools to choose from – the Thermal Pool, a refurbished Victorian bath filled with Buxton’s mineral-rich water; a relaxation pool with an atmospheric dark ceiling pierced with shafts of light; and an impressive indoor-outdoor rooftop pool which overlooks the historic town below.

Signature treatments include an individual thermal Buxton water bath imbued with CO2 to help boost circulation and lower blood pressure to a state of total zen. The spa is also the UK’s first to offer an underwater jet massage.

Book it: Room rates start from £125 per night based on two sharing. Spa treatments start from £35. ensanahotels.com/buxton/en

For West End pampering: The Londoner

Subterranean sanctuary The Retreat, which is situated at new Leicester Square hotel The Londoner – a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts – combines physical fitness, beauty and results-driven therapies for a holistic approach to wellness.

The Retreat features a private training gym, fitness classroom and a 12.5-metre pool dotted with private cabanas, as well as a barber, blow dry bar and nail bar to ensure clients emerge looking primped and preened to perfection.

After taking a fitness class at the state-of-the-art gym or enjoying an invigorating dip in the pool, clients can enjoy a post-workout juice, detoxifying smoothie or Ayurvedic morning ritual bowl at Refuel, the spa’s food and drink offering, which clients can also order to their private cabana.

Clients celebrating a special occasion or craving special treatment can hire the VIP Private Spa Suite, a private area featuring all spa services, with access to a private changing area, hot tub, steam room, day beds and the hammam.
