Marriott International will launch its first luxury safari lodge next year.
The lodge will feature 20 private tents and a presidential canvas-topped pavilion. It will be situated within Africa’s Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, overlooking the banks of the Talek river.
Shared spaces will include a restaurant, lounge bar, spa and an outdoor terrace with fire pits. In the evenings, the space will host traditional Masai dance performances.
The lodge will aim to employ up to 50 local people from the Masai community to help with land and wildlife conservation. Guests will also have opportunities to take part in learning activities.
In June, the reserve – home to lions, elephants and rhinos – plays host to migrating wildebeest during their annual 1,800 mile trek from the Serengeti in Tanzania.
Marriott will collaborate with family-run Baraka Lodges on the project, its first safari offering, with Kristina Zanic leading on the interior design, which will take inspiration from the landscape.
“JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge will offer guests a luxurious backdrop to make once-in-a-lifetime memories as they connect with nature and wildlife as never before,” said Bruce Rohr, vice-president and brand leader at JW Marriott, Marriott International.
“We are thrilled the JW Marriott brand will be welcoming adventure travellers, including families, to this breath-taking part of the world.”
Jerome Briet, chief development officer for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Marriott International, added: “This landmark project is in response to travellers’ growing desire for experiential offerings that enable them to build a deeper connection with their chosen destination.”
