Heritage Mexico property Hotel Esencia, owned by a Hollywood producer, has become the Set Collection’s first member in the Americas.
The 50-acre estate midway between Tulum and Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s Riviera Maya Caribbean coast was originally built as a private hideaway for an Italian duchess.
It later became a mansion hotel and since 2014 has been owned by Hollywood producer and entrepreneur Kevin Wendle.
The interior of the Main House, which includes paintings by Picasso and Eduardo Santiere, is surrounded by 47 suites and four villas overlooking the Caribbean.
One of the hotel’s most lavish accommodations is the four-suite Esencia Mansion, unveiled in 2022 with three pools, a 20-seat cinema, blue-chip artwork and an underground cocktail lounge.
The Hotel’s restaurants include sea-to-table Mistura, Beefbar, which has outposts in Paris, Mykonos and Dubai, and Taiyo which serves Japanese sushi with a Mexican twist.
There is also a spa with Mayan-inspired treatments.
The Set Collection is a portfolio of non-competing hotels which are encouraged to work together to achieve their business objectives.
Its four founding member hotels – Hotel Cafe Royal in London, Conservatorium in Amsterdam, Lutetia in Paris and Mamilla Hotel in Jerusalem have since been joined by four hotels in Asia – The Opposite House in Beijing, The Upper House in Hong Kong, The Temple House in Chengdu and The Middle House in Shanghai.
