Part of Sir Richard Branson’s collection of hotels and retreats, the 28-room hotel is being created as part of the restoration of an historic finca within the 810-acre estate.

The hotel will join three existing private villas at the estate in the island’s Tramuntana region – Sa Punta de S’Aguila; Sa Terra Rotja; and Son Balagueret.

Set to open in summer 2023, the Son Bunyola Hotel will offer two restaurants, lounges, outdoor dining terraces and a pool with views of the surrounding countryside.

“The north-west coast of Majorca has always been a very special place for Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Limited Edition,” said Jon Brown, managing director of Virgin Limited Edition.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to restore this beautiful monument and honour its rich history, and look forward to welcoming another small luxury hotel to our portfolio and inviting guests across the globe to discover this unspoilt corner of the world.”

Work on the 15th-century finca project started a year ago and alongside new design elements will be the restoration of historical elements such as wooden carpentry, stone arches, wrought ironwork and lime rendering.

Between the finca, the tafone – which previously housed an historic olive press – and several other annexe buildings, accommodation options will include two showcase Tower Suites, one of which was originally a medieval defence tower.

“Celebrating and preserving the heritage of this important Majorcan landmark has been at the very forefront of our restoration plans throughout and thanks to the fantastic work of Gras Architects, the Finca has very much been designed to enhance the incredible natural surroundings it is blessed with,” added Brown. “This is, of course, combined with our commitment to sustainability, something which is ingrained in everything we do – from energy saving to rainwater harvesting and environmental protection.”

A number of key sustainability initiatives are being built in from the early stages of design, including hot water supply using energy collected from the air conditioning and refrigeration cooling systems, and installation of a biomass boiler powered by recycled wood chippings.

It’s hoped bookings for the new hotel will open up later this year in anticipation of the summer launch.
