American Airlines is marking 40 years of flying to the UK with its largest Heathrow schedule to date.
Services began in May 1982 with a Boeing 747 flight from the airline’s Dallas/Fort Worth hub to Gatwick. The carrier launched operations at Heathrow in 1991, which now serves as its European gateway.
This summer, American plans to operate up to 23 daily flights to 10 US cities, including Boston, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, New York JFK, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Raleigh-Durham, which relaunches on 4 June.
Jose Freig, American’s vice-president for international, said: “With this significant growth in our operation, this summer American will offer more than 50 daily flights to 14 destinations in Europe, offering our customers an unmatched global network.”
In addition to operating from Heathrow’s Terminal 3, American’s flights to Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami and JFK will depart from Terminal 5 this summer, allowing connections with transatlantic joint venture partner British Airways.
