Silversea president Barbara Muckermann has left the luxury cruise line after 14 years to “pursue other opportunities”, with Royal Caribbean International’s Bert Hernandez assuming her role.
Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean Group president, hailed Muckermann, saying she had helped “position Silversea as the world’s top ultra-luxury and expedition cruise line”.
In an email to media today (12 April), Muckermann said she had decided to move to “a new challenge”. “It has been a privilege to serve this amazing brand, in this amazing industry, with the best press professionals I ever met,” she wrote.
In his current role, Hernandez works with his team to drive bookings for Royal Caribbean International in more than 80 countries.
Hernandez, who has been international senior vice-president at Royal Caribbean since March 2022, brings “tremendous commercial and operational experience” to his new position, the cruise giant said.
Hernandez has also served as president of China operations for Royal Caribbean, where he helped build the brand up, and before that he was chief operating officer at Royal Caribbean Group’s former cruise line, Azamara.
Liberty continued: "With deep industry knowledge, experience in markets around the world, and past leadership of a luxury cruise line, I know Bert is well positioned to chart a smart course for Silversea’s continued growth and success.
“At Royal Caribbean Group, we are committed to delivering the very best experiences in the ultra-luxury and expedition space, and I am confident in Bert’s ability to find opportunities to take the brand to the next level."
Hernandez said: “I have long admired the wonderful brand that Barbara and team have built over 30 years and respect how they have been driven to create the most unique and memorable experiences in travel.
“The opportunity to lead and grow such a beloved brand is a great honour, and I couldn’t be more excited to work with the experienced Silversea leadership team. The future of the brand has never been brighter.”
