Brittany Ferries has called on the UK government to provide "urgent clarity" on the date by which returning holidaymakers can switch from expensive PCR tests to cheaper lateral flow tests.
The measure, announced by transport secretary Grant Shapps last Friday (17 September) and accompanied by the end of pre-departure tests commencing 4 October, will make an international holiday "more attractive and less expensive for travellers", according to the company.
On Tuesday (21 September), Shapps indicated the relaxation of the testing rules may be in place in time for the October half-term, but failed to provide an exact date.
He said the lateral flow test capacity is preventing confirmation of the date for the half-term switch away from PCR.
Paul Acheson, sales and marketing director for Brittany Ferries, welcomed the changes to the travel framework for fully jabbed Brits and reported a "significant increase in reservations" as a consequence.
"However, many families looking for a last-minute break are understandably still wary," he added.
"We need government to announce a clear date upon which PCR tests will revert to lateral flow. This will release a dam of demand, supporting those working in the travel sector and giving holiday makers the full confidence they need to book a last-minute getaway."
Brittany Ferries has reportedly seen a 71% increase in reservations for the October half-term period and a 25% increase in forward reservations for 2022.
