The Future of Tourism Coalition is to host its first summit on Thursday (29 September) bringing together destinations, communities and travel sector businesses to explore “new possibilities for climate resilience”.
Centred around “creating a climate for collaboration”, the event will be held in-person in Athens and online and aims to turn “endless talk of collaboration into practical action” to help destinations and travel firms accomplish the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism goals.
This year’ summit is part of the Green Destinations 2022 conference, hosted by Athens at the city’s Technopolis venue.
The day will start with Future of Tourism Coalition partners – Green Destinations, Sustainable Travel International, Tourism Cares, the Center for Responsible Travel and the Travel Foundation – calling for “radical collaboration”.
Throughout the summit there will be presentations and discussions from a range of experts, while an “Action Group” workshop will be run to “foster collective thinking and create new pathways for collaboration” on climate action.
The event’s aim is for participants to feed into an “Athens Call to Action”, which will be used as a cornerstone and benchmark on climate action at future summits. There will also be an opportunity for participants to formally sign the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism.
The event will be streamed from 10am (local Athens time) at: youtube.com/c/GreendestinationsInfo
Jeremy Sampson, chair of the Future of Tourism Coalition, said: “Our coalition’s first-ever global summit is a major milestone, and I can’t imagine a better host than Athens – a city that is admired not only for its remarkable history and culture, but also its vibrancy and adaptiveness, with demonstrated leadership on key issues like climate change.
“We look forward to bringing local stakeholders together alongside other global leaders and experts as we explore how travel and tourism can move closer to a future that has the needs of communities and the environment at its heart."
