G Adventures and its non-profit arm Planeterra unveiled their newest charity project during the organisation’s first World Community Tourism Summit last month.
Project 300 will aim to uplift 300 communities around the world by 2030 by including community tourism enterprises into G Adventures’ tours.
Speaking during the summit in Peru, dubbed GX, Planeterra president Jamie Sweeting described Project 300 as “the next chapter” for the charity, with its strategy based on previously successful initiatives.
These include “50 in 5” – which was launched in 2015 and focused on building 50 new social enterprises into G Adventures’ programmes in five years – and Project 100, which took the total number to 100.
“Together, we will continue to harness the immense potential of responsible travel to make a positive difference in the lives of even more people around the world," said Sweeting.
Over the course of the summit, 350 travel industry members gathered in Cusco to learn about community tourism and the impact it can have on sustainability and women’s empowerment.
“We define community tourism as a group of people who play different roles in the tourism supply chain coming together and sharing a common responsibility,” added G Adventures founder Bruce Poon Tip.
“This is what our groups do every day: bring together people who want to have a positive impact on the communities they meet and have an amazing time together.”
The summit ended with the launch of Trees for Days, a new initiative which focuses on planting a tree for each day a traveller is on a G Adventures trip.
